Lye had horns on his head, a pointy tail & was red all over. His breath could wilt a field of daisies & his heart was black as coal. But he loved kittens. He kept a ball of string in his pocket to lure them in, but when they saw his scary face, they hissed & ran away.

Starve
We left camp as the first sun rose behind a ringed planet that hung in a dusty pink sky. The team astrobiologist, Sue, warned us not to touch the plants. It’s not like we were going to starve. We had plenty of food. I don’t know why Ike ignored her, but he ate a berry.

Ridge
I could have sworn something strange was moving in the night sky. I followed after it, running down a dark country road, through a field & over a ridge. When I came to a farmhouse where a man smoked a cherry & rum tobacco pipe, he pointed up & I knew I wasn’t crazy.

Sneaky
The best sound guy on the continent tried to fix the AI. “There’s something about the voice,” the team leader complained. “People say they feel like it’s being sneaky.” After working for hours, the sound guy finally said, “The voice is fine. It’s the eyes. Trust me.”

Flower
The alien was surprised at how quickly the young man had fallen for her. They’d gone outside, past the air shields. In the cold of open space, he’d opened a small box, revealing a flower, frozen with tiny ice crystals. Now, she felt even worse that he had to die.

Fail
He put on big heavy gloves, with radiation quilts tied around his waist. She got in front of him, blocking the way. “Did they fail?” she asked. The weather was getting worse & they hadn’t heard back from anyone in hours. “They didn’t succeed,” he said, pushing past.

Snowfall
The soulcatcher knew the best hunting grounds this time of year. She’d go to the city & wait, perched high on the tallest buildings with the gargoyles. Then, the first snowfall would come. Far below in the streets, the cars would slip & slide – and sooner or later…
