Pills wait on a steel pan as a nurse looks over the last of my paperwork. Satisfied, he sits beside me. “Immortality,” he says, “isn’t for everybody. Once you take these, the endless expanse of time will open before you.” I’m reaching for them before he can finish.

Red & blue flashed as they took bags of body parts from the abandoned farmhouse. The cop asked the girl, “What happened to your friends?” but all she could do was scream. “Dispatch,” he said into his radio. “Either we got us a T-Rex or chainsaw killer on the loose.”

“How can you do this?” my father asked.

“Running away,” he prodded.
“Carrying on,” I countered. “New horizons, Dad!”
Those were my final words to him before leaving for Mars. Now, 7 years later, he’s coming for a visit.

It happened under an apricot sky, in the graveyard at dusk. The crematory billowed, leaves everywhere, frosted and yellow. Her hair fluttered in a bitter wind, her back to my grandfather’s crypt. I fell in love with her then, and for years I’ve wondered her name.
