Revision Schism

Back in 1997, George Lucas made the controversial decision to remaster the original Star Wars trilogy. Like many purists of the time, I was deeply incredulous about this defacement of historic cinema, and for years, my opinion didn’t change. Then I reviewed my own original ‘trilogy’ – After Oxygen, Atlas Arch, and Ouch! Brain Splinters. Let’s just say, I’ve had a change of heart.
Unlike George, my work hasn’t (yet) found its way into the popular zeitgeist of universal recognition – but like the great one, I felt my first stories required an update. Some have warned there are consequences in literary circles, that auteurs won’t understand, but I’ve decided to bring some polish to my prose in spite of all that. The truth is that over the years, I’ve evolved as a writer, and my older work didn’t meet my current standards. There was only one choice, and though it was a difficult one, I’ve plowed through those dusty old texts and fixed my errors.
“What errors?” a scribe inquisitor may ask.
For the most part, sentence structure.
I know it’s mundane, but that’s the matter of the factor. I really disliked the way some of those old sentences were strung together, so I rewrote them – plain and simple. Now they read like buttered silk on a warm summer day. Nothing wrong with that… in my opinion. What I didn’t do was sand down any of the thematic rough edges. I thought about it, but no. My stories touch on testy territory because that’s what interests me. If I think a purple platypus in pantyhose is important to the tale, I’m writing about it, and I don’t give a rat’s ass if it’s rude, or classically unartistic, or politically incorrect. So, I didn’t change any of that – not one little bit.
For those who agree that art is alive and worth perfecting, please follow the links and purchase your own copies of these revised, remastered lyrical delights – but be warned… all the startling, strange, and unsettling bits remain. Happy reading to all my fans, and thank you for following along on this epic journey.
